Infant Development

0-12 months

We know the milestones, but how do we achieve them?

As parents, we have so much information at our fingertips, but what do we really need to know?

Starting at 1 month old, when the dust settles down and you get into a rhythm, you can start to encourage play and learning.

Tummy time is tough but using a boppy pillow to decrease the effect of gravity can help support your child to lift their head.

Use teething links as light weight toys for your child to learn to grasp and tolerate different textures in their hand

Recommended Toys/Equipment

Electronic musical toy

Teething links and silicone teething rings

O-ball

Mirror

Black and White cards

Suction spinners

Crinkle books

Stacking blocks (rubber teethers) and cups

Play piggy bank

What to look out for if I think my child needs services

Head turning only to one side

Not visually tracking or looking at an object or person throughout the visual field

Using only one arm or hand

Difficulty holding their head up after 2 months of age

Positioning of Toys for Development

Learning to sit: place toys on their lap to encourage weight bearing and upright posture

Sitting balance: place objects to the side and in front of feet

Promoting crawling: place toys slightly in front of knees and then continue to increase the distance

Promoting finger feeding: put 1-2 small pieces of food on the high chair at a time
